New digital geocoding tool gets FG backing

The Federal Government has endorsed the use of a new digital geocoding platform, YardCode, as part of its strategy to strengthen security operations and improve emergency response in Nigeria.

YardCode, developed by Dr. Olusola Ayola and his team, assigns a unique, permanent digital code to every one-square-metre space in the country, covering homes, public buildings, remote locations, and farmland.

Speaking virtually at the platform’s launch in Ibadan on August 7, Special Assistant to the President on ICT Policy, Dr. Salihu Dasuki, said the application would “facilitate better communication and coordination in emergency situations, which is crucial for timely responses to security threats.”

“The Federal Government’s commitment to leveraging ICT in tackling insecurity is unwavering. By utilising technology, we can foster a safer environment for all Nigerians,” Dasuki said.

Surveyor-General of the Federation, Adebomehin Adeyemi, said the current postcode system is inadequate and that a precise, adaptable geocoding solution is necessary. He described YardCode’s identifier system as a tool for “effective governance, seamless public service delivery, rapid emergency response, and strategic infrastructure planning.”

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, represented by Special Assistant on ICT and e-Governance Bayo Akande, pledged state government support for the technology, describing it as an “innovative solution to a national concern.”

According to Ayola, the platform’s algorithm-based coding system is designed to work in both online and offline modes, with features such as verifiable location sharing for security agencies, a digital proof of residence tool, and real-time route tracking.

Ayola added that YardCode’s integration capabilities allow banks, schools, hospitals, and logistics companies to embed the service into their operations, improving service delivery and KYC processes.

He said the platform would be particularly useful in rural areas, enabling farmers and traders in unaddressed locations to be found and accessed for commerce and support services.
