The Project Coordination Office (PCO) of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has said local youth have played a significant role in translating the project’s goals into action.
The PCO noted that youths have been instrumental in the physical restoration of polluted sites, promoting sustainable livelihoods, grassroots mobilisation, and digital advocacy.
According to a press statement by the Head of Communication, Dr. Enuolare Mba-Nwigoh, the energy, creativity, and resilience of Ogoni youths have been crucial in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) beyond ecosystem recovery towards inclusive growth and national unity.
He said the youths have stood at the frontlines, clearing impacted sites, engaging in construction works, championing community awareness, and driving narratives of hope and renewal through traditional and online media.
According to him, the Project Coordinator, Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey, has emphasised the importance of youth participation and empowerment in the project’s success.
To this end, HYPREP has established the Office of the Special Assistant on Women and Youth Development, which underscores the project’s commitment to promoting youth development and inclusivity.
He also noted that HYPREP had invested in training and skills development, creating opportunities for young people to become skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and advocates for sustainable development. He assured that the project will continue to offer platforms and opportunities that empower Ogoni youths to fulfil their potential and contribute to nation-building.
He said: “On the occasion of the 2025 International Youth Day, HYPREP commended the courage, dedication, and vision of Ogoni youths, calling for their continued support in achieving the project’s goals. By working together and leveraging local youth actions, inclusivity, and fostering unity, HYPREP believes that its goals will be achieved, and the Ogoni environment will be restored for a brighter future.”
