Group donates equipment to Lagos hospital for maternal death reduction

The Rotary Club of Surulere North East has donated medical equipment worth N600,000 to the Gbaja Healthcare (Mother and Child Hospital) at the Surulere General Hospital, Lagos, to help curb maternal mortality.

The items, including a laboratory incubator, a Salter weighing scale, a suction machine, and drip stands, were handed over as part of the club’s Maternal and Child Health project, themed “Maternal and Child Health: Visit to Community Healthcare Facility.”

Club President, Francis Abuah, said the hospital had provided a list of 20 essential items to improve patient care and boost treatment capacity.

“These will increase the number of patients attended to and enhance effective treatment,” he said. He added that the club also planted trees on the hospital premises to provide shade for patients and promote community health.

District Governor of Rotary International, District 9112 (covering parts of Lagos and Ogun states), Lanre Adedoyin, described the gesture as significant in the club’s history and urged the hospital to ensure judicious use of the items.

The Medical Director of the Maternal and Child Centre, Dr Oluwole Sojinrin, expressed gratitude, and called the donations ‘life savers.’ He noted that the centre attends to an average of 300 patients daily and that the equipment would directly improve maternal and child health outcomes.

Head of Medical Social Services, Mojeed Olabode, lauded Rotary’s consistent support, revealing that this was the fourth donation from Rotary clubs to the hospital this year.
