Chairman of Rano Local Council of Kano State, Muhammad Naziru Ya’u, has been suspended for three months over alleged misappropriation of funds. The council boss, who was axed by the State House of Assembly, was also indicted for diversion of fertiliser meant for public farmers at a subsidised rate.
The House arrived at the resolution at a plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Isma’il Falgore, yesterday, after it received a report of investigation from the Standing Committee on Public Petitions.
Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Lawan Hussaini Dala, disclosed that the probe followed a petition signed by nine out of the 10 councillors.
Dala, who is also the Assembly’s Majority Leader, said the councillors accused the suspended chairman of the sale of shops, among other allegations.
Though the allegations were refuted by the council boss, the Majority Leader said the committee began an investigation. He said the suspension period would allow for a painstaking inquiry.
Other recommendations include the immediate submission of the council’s 2025 financial statement and the appointment of the vice chairman to serve in an acting capacity during the suspension.
After careful deliberations, the House adopted the committee’s recommendations, effectively suspending the chairman and placing the council under temporary oversight.
