The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has suspended its secretary-general, Yusuf Ibrahim Adeniyi, over alleged misconduct and breach of trust.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the association presided over by its deputy national president, administration, Muhammad Abubakar Bishara, in Abuja.
RTEAN, in a statement on Thursday, said the NEC reviewed available reports on Adeniyi’s conduct and resolved that his actions violated the association’s constitutional provisions.
The suspension, according to the statement, takes immediate effect and will remain in place pending the conclusion of an investigation.
“During the meeting, the NEC deliberated extensively on matters concerning the conduct of the Secretary General, Yusuf Ibrahim Adeniyi. After reviewing available reports, the Council resolved that Mr. Adeniyi’s actions constituted misconduct and a breach of trust.
“In line with the Association’s constitutional provisions, and in the best interest of preserving the credibility and unity of the organisation, the NEC unanimously resolved to suspend Yusuf Ibrahim Adeniyi from office as Secretary General with immediate effect, pending the outcome of a thorough investigation,” the statement said.
To probe the allegations, the RTEAN NEC constituted a seven-member investigative committee chaired by Dr. Barrister Samuel Agbede, with Hon. Adamu Zubairu Jalaluddeen as secretary.
Bishara said other members are Adamu Bulama, Alhaji Salman Ayoku, Chief Ifie Orabor, and Alhaji Musa Zuba.
“The committee’s terms of reference include investigating all allegations, inviting and hearing all parties concerned, and submitting a written report of findings and recommendations to the National Executive Council within two months,” he added.
He said that pending the conclusion of the investigation, the deputy secretary-general, Henry Ugwu, will serve as Acting secretary-general of the association.
Bishara said the committee is empowered to request documents, invite witnesses, and carry out all lawful activities necessary to discharge its mandate.
