Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, has described physical and health education as the foundation for talent discovery, sports excellence, and social transformation.
Ezewu made the remark while addressing participants at the state conference of the Nigeria Association for Physical, Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER-SD), held at the Delta State College of Education, Mosogar.
The conference, themed “Revitalizing Physical and Health Education in Nigeria: Transforming Lives through Innovations, Inclusions and Sustainable Strategies,” brought together experts, educators, and policymakers from across the state.
Ezewu lauded Delta’s record of producing world-class athletes, attributing the feat to consistent investment in sports education. She urged stakeholders to prioritize physical and health education, stressing that it should not be treated as an afterthought but as “a foundation for shaping disciplined, healthy, and successful citizens.”
In his welcome address, NAPHER-SD State Chairman, Mr. Godspower Odede, said physical and health education was a tool for talent discovery, national unity, and inclusive growth.
The Provost of the host institution, Dr. Samuel Ugboduma, also commended the association, describing the college as a hub for grassroots sports development while calling for improved facilities.
Highlights of the event included a posthumous award to late football legend Peter Fregene and recognition of Ukwuani Local Government Chairman, Hon. Possible Ajede, as Best Chairman of the Year in Sports Development.
Other speakers, including the association’s National Secretary, Dr. France Atare, Dr. Solomon Ogbomah, and Dr.
Blessing Erumi, emphasized the need for innovation and passion in nurturing future sports leaders. Goodwill messages were also delivered by Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu, Executive Director of DESOPADEC, and Pastor Tony Pemu, who chaired the occasion.
