The Ogun State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to combating cult-related violence in the state, stating that sustained intelligence-led operations have significantly curtailed the menace.
This assurance came on Friday after the command dismissed an online publication that alleged renewed cult clashes in Abeokuta communities, which the report claimed led to the death of at least two people.
Describing the story as false and misleading, the Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said the publication was “fabricated” and “riddled with fictional claims.”
“The attention of the Ogun State Police Command has been drawn to a mischievous and misleading publication circulating on an obscure blog. The story is riddled with falsehood, fictional claims, and inaccurate dates. Ordinarily, the Command would not dignify such attention-seeking and unprofessional bloggers with a response. However, it is imperative to set the record straight to prevent misinformation and panic in our communities,” she said.
Odutola stressed that security measures taken by the police had reduced cultism to its barest minimum in the state. She disclosed that over 22 suspected cultists were recently apprehended in coordinated operations across different locations.
She further pointed out that the police had ensured there was no breakdown of law and order during the annual July 7 commemoration of the Neo Black Movement, which in past years often triggered cult-related violence.
“The much-feared 7th of July, 2025, passed without incident, as heightened police presence ensured peace and security,” Odutola stated.
She added that prosecutions of arrested cult members had led to convictions and jail sentences, a development that has been acknowledged by community leaders.
“The Ogun State Police Command, therefore, urges members of the public to disregard the fabricated tale of widespread cult violence being peddled online.
Such alarmist reports are not only false but also inimical to public peace and security. Residents of Ogun State are advised to continue their lawful businesses without fear, as the Command remains resolutely committed to ensuring safety, security, and the protection of lives and property,” she said.
