Truck accident kills four, injures three on Second Niger Bridge

A tragic road accident on the Second Niger Bridge in Asaba, the Delta State capital, has claimed the lives of four people, with three others seriously injured and receiving treatment at St. Rebecca Hospital.

The crash occurred on Monday and involved a cement-laden truck and two other vehicles. According to eyewitnesses, the truck, reportedly belonging to BUA Group, was speeding as it approached the bridge and lost control, eventually toppling and crushing the two smaller vehicles.
“We saw the truck carrying cement, and it was travelling at high speed, trying to navigate through the bridge, but it couldn’t be controlled. It eventually fell and crushed two vehicles. Many people died instantly, and others were seriously injured,” an eyewitness told reporters.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were quickly dispatched to the scene. The Delta State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Frederick Ogidan, confirmed the incident and attributed the crash to overspeeding on the part of the truck driver.
“Four persons were confirmed dead at the scene,” Ogidan stated. “The vehicle involved was a BUA cement truck, not a Dangote truck as some initially speculated. The victims were trapped in the vehicles due to the impact, and our tow truck had to be deployed for rescue operations.”

He expressed concern that such a fatal accident could occur on what he described as a well-maintained road, further emphasising the dangers of reckless driving.
The three injured victims are currently receiving treatment at St. Rebecca Hospital along Nnebisi Road, Asaba.

Authorities are urging motorists to adhere to speed limits and drive responsibly, especially on major routes like the Second Niger Bridge, to prevent further tragedies.
