Former Plateau State Governor, Senator Jonah David Jang, has called for the chairmanship position of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be returned to the North Central zone after the tenure of the current acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
Speaking at the Plateau North PDP caucus meeting in Jos, Jang said this would help balance the party’s political structure and strengthen its unity.
“We had it with Iyorchia Ayu, but he messed us up. After Damagum from the North East completes his tenure, the chairmanship should return to the North Central, where it originally belongs. We have the capacity to take the party to the next level. Let’s support the only PDP governor from the Central Zone,” Jang said.
He maintained that the PDP remains the only political party in Nigeria that has not split into factions since its formation, attributing its resilience to the solid foundation laid by its founders. However, he criticized some party members he described as “strayed founding fathers,” accusing them of pursuing personal interests at the expense of the people.
“Even though some individuals who once claimed to be founding fathers of the party have strayed, I ask, can a true founding father abandon his own house? Many of you have held high positions on the platform of the PDP. Today, you jump here; tomorrow, you jump there, all in search of personal gain,” he said.
Jang further recalled that before the last general election, some party stalwarts had stood firm in zoning the presidency to the South after former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure, but lamented that the process was manipulated by vested interests.
He urged unity within the Plateau PDP, stressing that loyalty and consistency were the true test of commitment to the party.
The caucus, at the end of the meeting, passed a vote of confidence in Governor Caleb Mutfwang, his deputy, and all members of the state executive committee, endorsing them for a second term.
According to a communiqué signed by the Plateau North PDP zonal chairman, Mr. Davou Mang, the endorsement was based on the administration’s performance in the past two years, particularly in infrastructure, economic growth, and other developmental strides.
