President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, describing it as a powerful tool for fostering unity among Nigerians.
The President made this declaration on Friday evening while officially declaring open the 9th edition of the National Youth Games holding in Asaba, Delta State.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Public Communication and former Minister of Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, President Tinubu emphasized that sports have remained a unifying force in the country.
“Sports are a symbol of unity; that is why I remain committed to investing more in the development of sports to encourage our sportsmen, women, and youths,” Tinubu said.
The President praised the role of the National Youth Games in talent discovery, saying the event continues to serve as a breeding ground for athletes who have gone on to bring glory to the country on both national and international stages.
He also commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, singling out Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade for their “capable and experienced” stewardship.
According to the President, their leadership will continue to elevate Nigeria’s standing in global sports.
Tinubu thus expressed gratitude to the government and people of Delta State for hosting the 9th edition of the Games.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, represented at the event by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor, welcomed athletes, officials, and visitors from across the country to Asaba.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting sports development, saying, “Today is a special moment for Delta State. This event is more than sports; it is a celebration of our youth, our unity, and the promise of a prosperous future. Delta State remains proud to be a home of sports and a breeding ground for national and international champions.”
Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, highlighted the achievements of the Commission under the leadership of Shehu Dikko, noting that the Youth Games remain a vital platform for discovering and nurturing Nigeria’s future sports stars.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, assured participants and visitors of a memorable experience.
He noted that Delta State had made extensive preparations, including the provision of state-of-the-art facilities, to host over 6,000 athletes from across the country.
The 9th National Youth Games in Asaba are expected to run for several days, showcasing young talent across various sports and further solidifying sports as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s unity and youth development.
