Enforce executive order on drugs, APC chief urges Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Osun, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, yesterday called on President Bola Tinubu to “direct full enforcement of the executive order” on reduction in prices of essential medical consumables and machines in the country.

He said this had become imperative to reduce the financial burdens of Nigerians battling ailments.

In a statement issued in Osogbo, Oyintiloye, who hitherto represented Obokun State Constituency in Osun State House of Assembly, noted that despite Tinubu’s Executive Order in June 2024, aimed at easing the financial burden of patients regarding drug prices, many life-saving drugs were still being sold at exorbitant prices.

He noted that the order, which introduced zero tariffs, excise duties, and VAT on specified machinery, equipment, and raw materials, among others, had yet to yield the desired results.

While recalling that the Nigeria Customs Service had announced the commencement of the implementation of the executive order in March 2026, Oyintiloye expressed worry that drug prices had continued to soar .

“Prices of critical drugs, such as insulin, Metformin, and Exforge, among others, are still very high. While prices of medicines such as Augmentin and Ventolin inhalers have slightly dropped, many other important medicines are still priced very high.

“I want to appeal to the President to see to the implementation of his executive order on drug prices for the benefit of Nigerians. There is no doubt that the President is doing everything within his power to provide quality health care delivery to Nigerians.”

Oyintiloye lauded Tinubu for subsidising the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals across Nigeria, saying the development would bring huge financial relief to many Nigerians battling kidney disease.
