CardCentre, MTN unveil made-in-Nigeria biodegradable SIM cards

CardCentre Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of Chams HoldCo, has strengthened its role in local manufacturing with the rollout of eco-friendly SIM cards produced in collaboration with MTN Nigeria.

The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, signals a shift towards homegrown solutions in the telecommunications sector. The SIM cards, manufactured in Nigeria, are made from 100 percent biodegradable materials and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Managing Director of CardCentre, Mr. Olalekan Latona, said the partnership demonstrates the capacity of indigenous companies to meet global production standards. “We are proud that these SIM cards, which comply with international sustainability requirements, are produced locally. This collaboration shows what Nigerian manufacturers can achieve when given the right opportunities,” he stated.

MTN Nigeria executives at the launch also underscored the significance of supporting local industries. Chief Sales and Distribution Officer, Mr. Olusina Adegoke, said the telecom operator is committed to strengthening partnerships that enhance domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. “This project is not only about sustainability but also about growing Nigerian manufacturing capacity,” he explained.

Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer, Mr. Tobe Okigbo, added that the collaboration aligns with MTN’s broader strategy of investing in local value chains. “We see this as part of our contribution to national development by creating opportunities for Nigerian businesses to thrive,” he said.

CardCentre, which has a history of providing smart card solutions to the financial, telecom, and public sectors, noted that the eco-friendly SIMs are part of a larger strategy to expand its product offerings while prioritising sustainable and locally driven innovation.

The company disclosed that research is ongoing to introduce additional eco-friendly solutions across its operations, reinforcing its position as a key player in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector.
