Cure for scarcity of faithful and Godly men

In the time of scarcity and demand for faithful and Godly men, the hope of the unborn generation lies on the shoulder of the few who have chosen not to defile themselves with the delicacies of a corrupt world. The influence of these men cut across sacred and secular circles. The ultimate question remains: what is the solution? Where is the cure hidden?

In life everyone may claim anything and everything, but Proverbs 20:6 said: “Most men will proclaim everyone his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?” The ultimate challenge to the cure is the fact that even the unfaithful proclaims and claims ‘goodness;’ not many wants to be true to their conscience and behaviour.

In the “Handbook on Faith, Hope and Love,” St. Augustine explores the nature of good and how even in evil, there must be a good for the evil to exist. It is evil that actually defines goodness. Augustine describes faithfulness (faith) as the foundation of Christian life, summarising it in the Apostles’ Creed, and emphasises that it is an inseparable component of the three theological virtues, along with hope and love. Faith enables the faithful to believe in and call upon God, serving as the bedrock from which true hope and love emerge, though he argues love is the greatest of the three, guiding all other actions and worship.

In ‘On the Priesthood;’ John Chrysostom does not directly define “faithful men” as a separate category, but also discusses the qualities of the faithful priest, emphasising the need for integrity, virtue, strong moral guidance, and unwavering commitment to duty, even in the face of worldly temptations and opposition. He contrasts this ideal with unfaithful or corrupt individuals who exploit their position for personal gain, arguing that true priesthood demands a selfless dedication to the flock and an ability to stand firm against the spiritual attacks of the “evil one.”

Qualities Of Faithful Priest
• Moral Integrity and virtue: The priest must strive for the highest moral standards, setting an example of virtue for the faithful.
• Spiritual and moral guidance: A priest’s primary duty is to provide moral guidance and spiritual leadership to the community, must be skilled in teaching and argumentation to effectively counter heresy and worldly influences.
• Selfless Service: A faithful priest prioritises the spiritual well-being of the flock over personal comfort or advancement, understanding that their position is a heavy responsibility given by God.
• Resilience and vigilance: Priests must be constantly vigilant and equipped to face the spiritual battles with the “evil one,” who is always seeking an opportunity to destroy souls.
• Prudence and experience: The priest needs wisdom and experience to manage the “ship” of the Church through spiritual storms, making decisions for the flock’s health and salvation.

The Contrast: Unfaithful Priesthood• Self-serving behaviour: Those who seek honour, but use their dignity as an excuse for sin or personal gain are contrasted with faithful priests.
• Corruption and harm: Chrysostom criticises those who admit corrupt individuals into the Church, comparing it to the chaos of opposing winds and waves on the sea, leading to spiritual shipwreck.
• Weakness in the face of temptation: The concept of the “fallen” priest is mentioned, but Chrysostom emphasises that true priests must be strong enough to overcome the temptations of the world while remaining in it.
Overall message: The concept of “faithful men” in Chrysostom’s work is embodied in the image of the ideal priest who is a dedicated shepherd, a moral compass, and a vigilant warrior against spiritual evil, always placing the needs of the faithful and God’s will above all else.
