The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State, Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin, has dismissed the notion of a mysterious myth surrounding multiple road accidents during the ember months.
Fasakin, who urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution during the period, maintained that there was no peculiarity or mystery attached to the ember months in relation to road crashes.
He spoke on the theme, “Safety on Our Roads and the Ember Months Mystery”, while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Information Chapel, during their monthly congress in Abeokuta, the state capital.
The commander explained that the rise in road crashes usually recorded during the ember months had nothing to do with superstition but was linked to human, vehicular, and environmental factors.
He said the only way to reduce the effect of the supposed “mystery” was for motorists and other road users to adhere strictly to safety measures to minimise accidents.
“The major reason we have an increase in the number of accidents during ember months is the surge in vehicular and economic activities on the roads during that period. Our target is to reduce crashes to the barest,” Fasakin said.
He urged motorists and road users to obey safety guidelines, including avoiding overloading, overspeeding, and drinking while driving, as well as ensuring that vehicles are in good condition before embarking on journeys. He stressed that road safety was not the responsibility of the government alone but a collective obligation of all.
The commander assured that the FRSC would continue to intensify its efforts by partnering with media organisations to enlighten the public on road safety practices.
Earlier, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Information Chapel, Comrade Femi Osipitan, commended the Corps for its continuous efforts in sensitising the public on road safety and pledged the media’s support in amplifying safety messages.
