To launch N500m endowment fund for indigent students
The Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos (UNILAG), has planned to hold its 60th anniversary themed: “Humanities as the Tech Solution to Global Crisis in 21st Century Africa.”
The Faculty, proudly known as “The Home of Letters,” has stood as a beacon of intellectual excellence, scholarship, and cultural advancement in Nigeria and across the African continent for six decades.
Chairman, Central Planning Committee of the anniversary, Francis Shonubi, said the theme of the anniversary speaks to the evolving role of the humanities in addressing global and regional challenges — from governance to climate change, Artificial Intelligence (AI), migration, education, and sustainable development.
According to him, as part of our week-long anniversary activities, we are pleased to announce the gala night and award dinner, which will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at Protea by Marriott Select Hotel Conference Hall, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State at 5:00 p.m.
The event, he said, would bring together academia, public figures, policy makers, alumni, friends of the Faculty, and members of the diplomatic and traditional institutions.
Also, he said that the anniversary week would span from Sunday, October 19, to Saturday, October 25, 2025, featuring a lineup of academic, social, and cultural activities designed to showcase the enduring legacy and future potential of the Faculty.
Besides, he said the celebration would feature the launch of a N500 million endowment trust fund to support students with special needs, implement the “Light Up Arts Complex” initiative — an alternative solar power solution, fund research and learning innovations, sponsor scholarships for indigent students, as well as support other strategic faculty development goals.
Shonubi, therefore, call on all alumni, stakeholders, friends of the Faculty, corporate organisations, and the public to generously support the initiative, saying that their contributions would help to sustain and expand the Faculty’s legacy for generations to come.
Meanwhile, during the gala night, awards of excellence will be presented all past Deans of the Faculty since inception, outstanding Faculty members and alumni, distinguished friends of the Faculty and the institution at large.
