Inspector General of police Kayode Egbetokun is representing the country at a major global forum on public security in China, officials said Monday.
Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, is leading a Nigerian delegation to the Global Public Security Cooperation Forum (GPSCF), which opens on Tuesday in the eastern Chinese city of Lianyungang and runs until September 18.
Hosted by Beijing, the forum gathers security ministers, police chiefs, and experts from across the world to debate responses to cross-border crime and ways to strengthen international cooperation.
On Thursday, Egbetokun is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on “Combating Transnational Crime and Countermeasures,” focusing on Nigeria’s policing reforms, its fight against organised crime and its partnerships with global allies.
Ahead of the forum, he is holding talks with China’s Deputy Public Security Minister Qi Yanjun. Discussions are expected to cover intelligence sharing, training, and closer collaboration between Nigerian and Chinese security agencies, police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said.
Nigeria faces a host of domestic security challenges, including jihadist insurgency in the northeast, mass abductions for ransom in the northwest, and separatist unrest in the southeast. Officials in Abuja have increasingly turned to international partnerships to strengthen law enforcement capacity and improve technology-driven policing.
“The attendance of the Inspector-General of Police at this global platform underscores Nigeria’s commitment to international collaboration and proactive responses to emerging threats,” Hundeyin said.
