The Delta State Government has commended Zenith Bank Plc for its unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and sports development, as demonstrated through the continued sponsorship of the Delta State Principals’ Cup Football Competition.
Speaking at a press briefing in Asaba on Tuesday, the State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, praised the bank’s consistent support over the past eight editions of the tournament.
She described the initiative as a beacon of hope for young students who aspire to pursue a career in sports alongside their education.
“Zenith Bank’s consistent investment has not only sustained this competition but has transformed it into one of the most prestigious platforms for nurturing sporting talent among secondary school students in our dear state,” Ezewu said.
She noted that the competition has produced numerous success stories, with several players now representing Delta State both locally and internationally.
She emphasised that the competition extends beyond football, serving as a vital tool for youth empowerment, discipline, teamwork, and character development.
Dr. Ifeanyi Atama, the Zonal Head of Zenith Bank, highlighted that the bank launched the Zenith Bank-Delta State Principals’ Cup initiative in 2017 as part of its long-term strategy to foster youth engagement and sports development in the state.
“Our partnership with the Delta State Government reflects our dedication to leveraging sports for socio-economic empowerment,” Dr. Atama said.
He added that the competition continues to serve as a crucial platform for unearthing and cultivating the athletic potential of Delta’s youth—young individuals who embody the future aspirations of society.
“The values promoted through football—discipline, teamwork, and resilience—are key to the development of character and leadership in young athletes,” Atama said.
Also speaking, the competition’s consultant, Mr. Tony Pemu, reiterated that the core objective of the Principals’ Cup is to identify, develop, and showcase hidden talent within the state’s youth.
“This initiative is not just a formality. Our dream is to groom these talents for international platforms. We are actively exploring collaborations to train and promote our players beyond the shores of Nigeria,” he stated.
Pemu further acknowledged the growing influence and reach of the competition, noting a steady increase in the number of participating schools.
