Two people died in a road crash on Tuesday when the driver of a bus rammed into a moving truck from behind near Mountain Top University on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
Two others sustained injuries in the accident, while a separate crash along the Kobape axis of the Siun-Sagamu Expressway claimed one life.
The vehicles involved in the first accident were a white Hiace bus with registration number AGL 54 XU and an unidentified truck.
The spokesperson of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday.
Akinbiyi said 12 people, made up of seven males and five females, were in the bus. Two (a male and a female) sustained injuries, while two others (also a male and a female) died on the spot.
He attributed the cause of the crash to excessive speed and loss of control by the bus driver.
“The driver of the Hiace bus rammed into the moving truck from the rear due to his excessive speed and loss of control. In the process, the unknown truck ran away,” he said.
Akinbiyi added that the injured were taken to AZ Hospital, Magboro, by operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while the corpses were deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue in Sagamu.
He said the road was reduced to a single lane to clear the crash, and the bus was towed by the Ibafo Police.
On the separate accident at Kobape, Akinbiyi said no injuries were recorded, but one person died. The vehicles involved were a black Toyota car with registration number BDG 488 JB and a Bajaj motorcycle without a registration number.
He explained that three men were involved in the crash, but only one died, linking the cause to overspeeding by the Toyota driver who hit the motorcycle from the rear.
According to him, the car driver, identified as a police officer, has been arrested, while the deceased, also a police officer, has been deposited at the Owode General Hospital morgue.
