Foundation organises stage play on child domestic workers’ protection

Street Project Foundation will stage a play, Bobo to draw attention to the plight of child domestic workers on Saturday, September 20, by 3 p.m. at Gerard Catholic Church, Adekunle Osomo Street, Araromi Gbagada, Lagos.

According to the Lead Visioner, Mrs. Rita Ezenwa- Okoro “at the heart of the Artvocacy is the protection of Child Domestic Workers (CDWs), one of the most vulnerable and invisible groups of children in Nigeria.”

She disclosed that “the stage play is part of a larger effort supported by The Freedom Fund and the U.S. Government to raise awareness, shift attitudes, and build accountability around child domestic workers’ protection in Nigeria.”

She said: “Many young boys and girls working in homes as ‘house helps’ face exploitation, abuse, isolation, and loss of education opportunities. Their struggles often go unseen because domestic work happens behind closed doors, leaving them without adequate legal or community protection.”

Ezenwa-Okoro added that the project is using theatre and performance as tools of social change to shine a light on these hidden realities.

“By creating a safe stage for young people to tell stories from their own communities, projects like BOBO call attention to child rights, amplify silenced voices, and encourage society to recognize that “house helps” are first and foremost children who deserve dignity, education, and protection.

“Bobo is more than entertainment – it’s community storytelling, social commentary, and youth empowerment all in one.

“The event is free to attend and invites everyone to witness the creativity and resilience of Gbagada youths,” she stated.
