The Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), Lagos Branch, has commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his administration’s efforts in promoting peace and security across the state.
In a statement marking this year’s World Peace Day, signed by the branch chairman, Richard Adeyinka Emmanuel, and general secretary, Dr. Hasan Sulaimon, the society highlighted several initiatives of the government.
The SPSP noted that the Lagos State Government had equipped the Nigerian Police Force with 260 vehicles, bulletproof vests, body-worn cameras, and helmets in the past year to boost crime-fighting capacity and safeguard lives and property.
It added that 1,000 new officers were recruited into the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps to strengthen intelligence gathering and combat crime, particularly in hotspots such as Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Lekki.
The group also lauded the restructuring of the state’s criminal justice system through the introduction of the Lagos Criminal Information System (LCIS), a technological innovation aimed at enhancing efficiency.
On domestic concerns, the SPSP applauded the government’s zero-tolerance stance on sexual and gender-based violence, which resulted in over 140 convictions and six restraining orders, despite 8,692 reported incidents in the past year.
“Victims of sexual assault have been provided with free medical care and shelter, while child survivors of domestic abuse have received counselling. Free legal assistance has also been made available to some survivors,” the society noted.
The SPSP urged the Sanwo-Olu administration to sustain its commitment to peace and security, acknowledging the relative calm in some of the state’s previously troubled areas.
