Several Nigerian and African leaders have been named among recipients of the 2025 Democracy Heroes Award Africa, an annual event that recognises individuals for their role in strengthening democratic governance and promoting development.
The award, organised by Face of Democracy Nigeria Projects (FDN Projects), is scheduled to take place on October 16 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
Among those listed for recognition are the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; Senators Sani Musa and Opeyemi Bamidele; the President of Botswana, Duma Gideon Boko; and former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan. Also expected to be honoured are the governors of Borno, Cross River, Ondo, Oyo, Katsina, Delta, Ebonyi, Kaduna and Kebbi States.
Other recipients include figures from the business and entertainment industries who, according to the organisers, have played key roles in job creation, youth empowerment and poverty alleviation.
This year’s award is themed “Legacy of Leadership: Powering Africa’s Future.” The organisers said the programme seeks to highlight how leadership legacies across Africa continue to shape the continent’s democratic culture.
Project Director of FDN, Olufunsho Ajagbonna, popularly known as Fajag, explained that the recognition is aimed at encouraging leaders to sustain impactful performance. “The organisation will continue to encourage excellent performance by recognising those who have distinguished themselves in serving the people,” he said.
According to FDN, the Democracy Heroes Award honours political leaders for contributions to democratic growth through policy and projects, while also extending recognition to entrepreneurs and entertainers whose work has supported national stability.
