Strike: Makinde promises LAUTECH Teaching Hospital workers improved welfare

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, met with striking professional bodies at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, and announced measures to address their demands.

The governor, who also visited the Soun of Ogbomoso, assured the monarch that his administration would soon commence the reconstruction of inner roads in the town.

Speaking at the hospital, Makinde said his administration remains committed to workers’ welfare while balancing resource allocation to ensure sustainable development.

As part of immediate interventions, the governor announced the constitution of a Governing Council for the hospital within the week.

He also approved a monthly stipend of ₦80,000 for 65 non-staff security personnel, who will now be integrated into the system as ad-hoc staff.

In addition, he approved an increase of ₦35 million in the hospital’s monthly subvention to ease operations.

Makinde also approved the payment of accumulated promotion arrears totaling ₦219 million, which will be disbursed in three installments between October and December 2025.

He further pledged to offset arrears of the new minimum wage, covering January to August 2025, in three tranches also payable within the same period.

The governor added that long-term solutions, including the completion of the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Annex in Oyo before the end of his administration in 2027, were being prioritised.

He stressed that welfare concerns would be addressed, but workers must also recognise the need for investments in infrastructure to secure the future.

“Government must manage resources in such a way that it is not just about this generation or the next election but also about the welfare of the next generation,” he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, said the governor’s visit reflected his commitment to improving healthcare delivery.

Acting Chief Medical Director, Professor Olawale Olakulehin, commended Makinde as a “listening governor” for increasing the hospital’s subvention.

Representatives of professional bodies and students, including JOHESU, nurses, midwives, and medical students, thanked the governor but urged further improvements in welfare and infrastructure.

At the palace, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, lauded the governor’s style of governance and expressed appreciation for his interventions in the hospital crisis and rehabilitation of inner roads.
