The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has charged newly inducted nurses of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU), to practise with integrity, compassion, and professionalism.
Registrar and Secretary-General of the Council, represented by Mrs Stella Goodwill, gave the charge at the university’s 11th Induction and Swearing-in Ceremony, where 242 graduate nurses took the professional oath. She reiterated that the Council would continue to strictly monitor the activities of nurses across the country to ensure high standards of practice.
The ceremony featured the administration of the induction oath, presentation of licenses to the graduands, unveiling of the university’s Nursing Magazine, presentation of awards to outstanding staff and partner institutions, and a lecture titled “Nursing: Power to Change the World” delivered by Dr. Chidimma Israel.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, represented by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Dick Uduma, said the new nurses had been “thoroughly trained and moulded into professionals who will contribute significantly to healthcare delivery globally.”
He urged them to remain worthy ambassadors of their alma mater and uphold the values of the profession.
The VC also commended Abia State Governor and Visitor to the university, Dr Alex Otti, for initiating the construction of a 10,000-capacity hostel on campus and for ensuring the prompt payment of staff salaries. He further praised parents and guardians for their sacrifices in supporting the graduates.
Earlier, the Head of Department of Nursing Science, Dr Peace Okoroafor, appealed for an increase in the admission quota for nursing students, noting the growing demand for the profession.
She charged the new nurses to uphold ethical standards and take up leadership roles in the future.
Speaking on behalf of the inductees, the best graduating student, Miss Chidera Okochi, expressed gratitude to the university community and parents for their support, pledging that the new nurses would not disappoint.
