In a renewed effort to address the rising cases of insecurity, moral decline, and youth unemployment in Nigeria, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Ladies Breaking Boundaries, has reiterated that effective mentorship remains one of the most powerful tools to redirect the energy and creativity of Nigerian youths toward nation-building.
The organisation stated this during its one child, one mentor conference held in Lagos with the theme “I Rebuild.”
President of the organisation, Omotope Opatola, who spoke at the event, said the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between young Nigerians and experienced professionals who can guide them in making informed decisions that positively impact their lives and the nation.
Also, Convener of the programme, Tinu Philips-Odufuye, said the theme was chosen to encourage Nigerians, particularly the youth, to take personal responsibility for national transformation rather than apportioning blame.
Philips-Odufuye reaffirmed the group’s commitment to sustaining the initiative, saying that its long-term goal is to build a generation of responsible, productive, and patriotic Nigerians.
She added that the conference aims to help young Nigerians discover their potential and channel it into innovation, entrepreneurship, and community impact rather than negative pursuits.
One of the guest speakers, Pastor Joshua Banjo, noted that insecurity could be tackled at the roots through early mentorship and value reorientation.
“When we catch them young and instil the right values, we prevent the emergence of future criminals. The youths are not just leaders of tomorrow; they are leaders now. We must guide them to see that a great Nigeria is possible,” he said.
However, the organisation also unveiled a new digital mentorship platform known as “Mentee,” designed to connect young people with mentors across various industries. The platform will allow mentees to choose mentors based on career interests while tracking engagement and progress online.
Meanwhile, the event was supported by sponsors, including FCMB Asset Management, FCMB Education Investment Plan, Lucky Children Orchestra, Better Malt, John Bent Foods, and Armond School Shoes.
