NHIA partners NBS, Servicom to deepen health insurance

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Servicom Unit of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to expand health insurance coverage and improve service quality for over 20 million enrollees across Nigeria.

Speaking at the event in Abuja, NHIA Director-General, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, said the partnership with the NBS would enable the authority to build a more responsive and data-driven health insurance system that reflects the realities of Nigerians.

He described the NBS as the government’s lead statistical agency and stressed that the collaboration would ensure that accurate data—particularly those affecting the poor and vulnerable—are captured and used to shape inclusive health policies.

Ohiri noted that accurate and timely data are essential for planning, implementation, and evaluation of health insurance policies, adding that both agencies are committed to improving data quality to measure the impact of health insurance services on citizens.

“This is both a commitment of the Statistician-General and myself to improve data quality and to be able to answer simple but crucial questions — what works well in Nigeria, and are we having measurable impact on people’s lives?” he said.

He explained that the MoU with Servicom, which focuses on enhancing service delivery across government institutions, aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s agenda on Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

According to him, UHC goes beyond access to healthcare and includes ensuring the quality of services Nigerians receive in health facilities.

“By partnering with Servicom during Customer Service Week, we are leveraging our combined resources to ensure Nigerians enjoy better service. When enrollees visit a facility, they have rights, and if there are complaints, we want to hear and resolve them,” Ohiri said.

He added that the NHIA’s enrollee charter and QR-based feedback system would be activated in partnership with Servicom desk officers to improve accountability and service delivery across facilities.

Ohiri reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to achieving universal health coverage, noting that the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare has outlined a four-point agenda focused on improving governance, strengthening service delivery, unlocking the healthcare value chain, and enhancing health security.

He emphasized that the NHIA’s role is to ensure financial access to quality healthcare services for all Nigerians.
