As part of activities marking the 2025 World Mental Health Day themed “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” the Department of Mental Health, University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), has called for improved access to mental health services across communities.
During a courtesy visit to the Hospital Management led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, the Head of Department, Prof. Ehigiator Adayonfo, highlighted the severe psychological impact of crises such as disasters, pandemics, conflicts, and insecurity on individuals and communities.
He commended the hospital’s leadership for its continued support in strengthening mental health and addiction services both within and beyond UBTH, noting that sustained institutional backing was crucial for expanding access to care.
Adayonfo emphasized the need to integrate mental health into emergency preparedness plans, train more professionals in psychological first aid and trauma-informed care, and enhance public awareness to make mental health services more accessible.
He added that building stronger collaborations among government agencies, healthcare institutions, and community organizations would ensure timely support for those affected by crises.
In her remarks, Prof. Ize-Iyamu congratulated the department for its initiatives and reaffirmed her commitment to integrating mental health care into primary healthcare services across Edo State.
The visit concluded with the exchange of souvenirs and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion.
