Foundation, Benue train farmers, agric officers

Growers in the North-East have been trained on climate-smart farming techniques to mitigate risks and boost yields by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Foundation.

The farmers expressed their willingness to adopt the techniques at the close of a training session for vulnerable participants, organised by the social arm of the company for the Gombe cluster, comprising farmers from Gombe, Adamawa, and Taraba states, held in Gombe over the weekend.

According to the farmers, adopting new soil management and climate-conscious techniques would enhance food production and security in the region, thereby reducing poverty.

One of the participants, Habila Bitrus, hailed the foundation for the initiative, submitting that it would increase yields.

He said the training had equipped them with new knowledge and ideas, as well as marketing strategies.

Project Manager of the NNPC Foundation, Mrs Goodnews Willie, described the programme as a living legacy of empowerment, resilience, and sustainable growth.

Relatedly, the Benue Digital Infrastructure Company (BDIC) has trained 23 Divisional Agriculture Officers and State Administrators in digital skills through the Benue State Smart Agriculture and Data Management System, code named BenADAMS.

The two-day training was held in conjunction with the Benue State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Makurdi over the weekend.

BDIC’s Head of Marketing and Media, Dooyum Naadzenga, explained that “BenADAMS is a cutting-edge digital platform developed by BDIC to centralise critical agricultural data—covering crop distribution, livestock records, and farming inputs.”

The platform, he added, is to enhance agricultural planning, eliminate subsidy fraud by identifying “ghost farmers,” and ensure that genuine farmers receive government interventions promptly and transparently.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Gbande-Hembaor Terwase, disclosed that BDIC would deploy and monitor field agents across the state to capture and profile farmers, ensuring inclusive participation in government agricultural programmes.

“This data-driven approach will promote transparency, efficiency, and better decision-making across the agricultural value chain,” he said.
