Egbetokun hails Tinubu, National Assembly over Police reform bills

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has commended President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly for their commitment to transforming policing in Nigeria through the passage and signing of the Police Institutes Establishment Bill and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Egbetokun described the development as a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s quest for modern and professional policing.

He said the new laws represent a historic stride toward enhancing professionalism, sustainable funding, and improved welfare for police personnel nationwide.
“The Nigeria Police Force has recorded yet another significant milestone in its reform and modernisation efforts. These legislations provide a solid legal foundation for building a modern, accountable, and well-equipped police institution that meets the security needs of a dynamic society,” the IGP stated.

Egbetokun explained that the Police Institutes Establishment Act consolidates and modernises all police training and research institutions across the country, expanding their academic capacity and aligning their curricula with global standards in law enforcement, investigation, technology, and community policing.
“With this Act, the Force can now coordinate professional training more effectively and prepare officers for the complexities of modern-day policing,” he added.

He assured Nigerians that the new legal framework would strengthen ongoing reforms, elevate training standards, and nurture a new generation of disciplined, world-class officers.

On the Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Act, Egbetokun said the legislation would fortify the Force’s financial and administrative systems, ensuring greater fiscal transparency and sustainability.
“It guarantees consistent and well-managed funding for operations, logistics, training, equipment, and welfare — key factors that have long limited the Force’s operational capacity,” he said.

The IGP added that the reforms address decades-long challenges in training, infrastructure, and welfare, paving the way for a more motivated and professional police force committed to citizen-focused service delivery.

He described the enactment of the laws as a “victory for national security, professionalism, and public trust.”
