Stakeholders at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), including students and union leaders, have pledged to maintain peace and stability on campus to enable the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, to complete his developmental agenda and sustain the university’s stable academic calendar.
The unions represented at the event included the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).
Speaking during a warm reception for Prof. Fasina on Tuesday as he resumed duties after a six-month accumulated research leave, President of the FUOYE Alumni Association, Mr. Arogundade Temitope, described the vice chancellor as a visionary leader whose tenure has transformed the institution.
“We are glad to welcome Prof. Fasina back after his leave. He has performed admirably well, and we are confident that his return will bring more development to the university. At this point, we appeal for peace—let there be peace on campus,” Arogundade said.
Vice President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South West Zone, Comrade Owolabi Taiwo, declared that peace on the FUOYE campus was “non-negotiable” as the vice chancellor resumed.
“This is our university, and as students, we are the greatest stakeholders. We will not allow any selfish union leader to disrupt the peace and stability that we enjoy under Prof. Fasina’s leadership,” Owolabi warned.
Similarly, NASU and NAAT chairmen, Comrade Ayeni Abraham and Comrade Babafemi Olusola, said their unions remain committed to campus harmony and expressed confidence in the VC’s commitment to staff welfare and institutional growth.
Top members of SSANU, Mr. Akinrope Olufemi and Mr. Owonsaye Wale, urged the national leadership of the union to intervene in the crisis within FUOYE’s SSANU chapter, alleging that the local leadership had compromised members’ interests.
According to them, over 50 SSANU members in FUOYE have petitioned the national and zonal leaderships over the matter, but are yet to receive any response.
Addressing the crowd of staff, students, and alumni who gathered to welcome him, Prof. Fasina expressed gratitude for the show of support and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing FUOYE’s growth.
He noted that he had about four months left in his tenure and would focus on consolidating his achievements over the past four years and seven months.
“I assure both staff and students of more welfare packages, infrastructural development, and institutional stability if peace continues to reign on our campus,” he said.
On the process of appointing his successor, Fasina said he had no control over the selection but expressed confidence that the University Council would choose a capable successor to sustain the university’s progress.
