The Headquarters of 63 Brigade, Nigerian Army, has confirmed the death of a suspect at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State, following a confrontation with a soldier on duty.
In a statement released on Wednesday, 15 October 2025, Captain Iliyasu Bawa-Rijau, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, explained that the incident occurred on 13 October when a soldier attempted to stop a group of unidentified individuals from entering the estate without completing mandatory security checks.
“The individuals became violent and unruly after being questioned about their identities and reasons for attempting to gain entry into the restricted premises,” the statement said. “The altercation escalated into a physical struggle, during which the soldier, who acted in self-defence, employed armed combat skills and injured one of the individuals.”
The injured suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but was later pronounced dead.
The Otu-Jeremi Police Division was promptly notified and has commenced an investigation into the incident.
Captain Bawa-Rijau stressed that the Nigerian Army is committed to upholding human rights and ensuring professional conduct in the discharge of its duties. “Respect for the fundamental human rights of citizens has always been prioritised in the discharge of our statutory responsibilities in Delta State,” he said.
He further urged residents to comply with security procedures, noting: “The Brigade wishes to reiterate to the good people of Delta State the need to remain law-abiding and submit themselves to security checks in line with existing standard operating procedures.”
The statement concluded by affirming the Army’s continued collaboration with other security agencies to maintain peace and order across Delta State.
