Kidnapping: NSCDC arrests 70 suspects in Edo

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad, has arrested 70 suspects in connection with kidnapping, rape, logistics supplies, and other criminal activities in the Okpella area of Esouko East Local Government Area, Edo State.

Leader of the CG’s Special Intelligence Squad, Commandant AS Dandaura, outlined the effort of the corps to dismantle a network of criminals posing as illegal miners and charcoal vendors engaging in kidnappings.

He said, “Following the directive of the Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, on an aggressive onslaught against unscrupulous elements terrorising Edo State, we launched this operation.”

Contained in a statement by the Corps National Public Relations Officer (PRO), Afolabi Babawale, the operation was done in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and the General Manager of BUA International Cement, Mr. Richard Gidado.

“During the clearance operation, we uncovered and dismantled criminal hideouts used for holding kidnapped victims,” Dandaura said.

He noted that some kidnappers escaped capture, but they were able to rescue one Mrs. Agbe Matar, who had been held captive for more than seven days.

Commandant Dandaura further said, “Our efforts to dismantle the kidnap syndicate and their hideouts underscore our dedication to protecting the lives and property of citizens. Further investigations and prosecutions will follow.”
Describing her ordeal, Mrs. Agbe recounted being kidnapped along with her sister while working on their rice plantation.

“Over five armed men stormed our farm disguised as herders and took us hostage while my husband managed to escape.
“At the kidnappers’ den, we faced severe torture, and they demanded a 30 million naira ransom for our release,” she was quoted as saying.

According to the agency, Mrs. Agbe and other victims have since been reunited with their families.

The Ogei-Ochi III of Itsukwi Kingdom, His Royal Highness Usman Suleiman, praised the NSCDC’s efforts, stating, “The pragmatic leadership of the NSCDC Commandant General has brought hope and peace back to our area.”
