The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ondo State Command, has disclosed that no fewer than 130 deaths were recorded in the 259 road traffic crashes that occurred between January and September 2025 in the state.
According to the Sector Commander in the state, Samuel Ibitoye, to reduce road crashes, road users must remain cautious and commit to safe driving practices.
While stressing this at the Command’s headquarters in the state, Ibitoye reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to partnering with relevant agencies in order to ensure safer roads.
The Commander maintained that the annual Ember Months campaign aimed to sensitise motorists, enforce traffic regulations, and discourage deliberate violations of road safety rules, noting that the Ember Months were often characterised by increased vehicular movement and congestion, which frequently led to impatience and reckless driving.
He said, “In Ondo State, it is lamentable that the Command recorded 259 road traffic crashes from January to September 2025, out of which 130 people lost their lives.
“Of the total crashes, 71 were fatal and 173 were serious, while 15 were minor within the period under review.
“This trend cannot be left unchecked. It has, therefore, become necessary to adopt strategic measures to stem the tide as we move into the Ember Months.”
Ibitoye further revealed that mobile court sittings would be conducted regularly for instant adjudication of erring motorists, while medical outreach programmes would be organised at motor parks to assess drivers’ health conditions.
“With this Ember Months campaign, the FRSC in Ondo State is fully prepared for 24-hour rescue operations to provide emergency assistance to crash victims at any time of the day.
“We will also intensify enforcement of traffic laws, particularly against the use of mobile phones while driving and other related infractions,” Ibitoye stated.
