Urges IGP to launch investigation into arrest of protesters
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ogun State chapter, yesterday, called for the immediate release of human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore; counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor; Kanu’s brother, Emmanuel Kanu, and other demonstrators arrested by the police during the #FreeNnamdiKanu Now Protest.
The party equally called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to launch an investigation to fish out officers involved in the arrest of the protesters and make them accountable for violating the demonstrators’ human rights to protest.
Chairman of ADC in Ogun State, Femi Soluade, who spoke exclusively yesterday, accused the police of abusing power for arresting Sowore and others during the protest, insisting that such an arrest contravenes their fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
Soluade said: “The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State views with profound dismay and condemnation the recent arrest and detention of activist, Omoyele Sowore; Aloy Ejimakor (Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Special Counsel), and Emmanuel Kanu (Mazi Kanu’s brother), alongside other peaceful demonstrators in Abuja.
“We hereby demand their immediate and unconditional release.
“The action by the police represents not just an abuse of power, but a direct and grievous slap on the fundamental human rights of Nigerian citizens as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”
