Akpabio, EU lawmakers renew commitment to regional stability

A delegation from the European Union (EU) Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, led by Mr. David McAllister, on Tuesday met with the Nigerian Senate to strengthen cooperation on security, trade, and governance.

McAllister said the visit was part of the EU’s regional engagement tour aimed at reinforcing partnerships in West Africa, noting that Nigeria remains a key strategic ally.

“We are here to reinforce our partnership with Nigeria and better understand developments in the region,” he said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who received the delegation, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening ties with the EU in promoting peace, trade, and democratic governance.

“Nigeria values its relationship with the European Union, especially in advancing peace, trade, and democratic ideals,” Akpabio stated.

The delegation included Ambassador Greta Mylott, EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS; Zelaya Zorko; Mata Tamido; Sebastian Tankman; General Christophe Gomart; and Sebastian Buharo.

During the meeting, Akpabio underscored ongoing efforts to improve female political representation, stressing that cultural and social barriers still limit women’s participation in governance.

“Women often vote for male candidates, which makes it harder for female aspirants to emerge. The Senate is considering reforms to promote gender inclusion,” he said.

McAllister reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development priorities, particularly in addressing terrorism, climate change, and economic challenges.

“A stable and democratic Nigeria is vital to regional peace and prosperity,” he noted.

The EU delegation is also scheduled to attend the International Islamic Conference on Security and Governance in West Africa and the Sahel, to be held from November 4 to 6, 2025, at the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja.

Akpabio expressed optimism that the renewed engagement would strengthen institutional collaboration and shared growth.

“Our partnership with the EU is built on mutual respect and a shared vision for a safer, more prosperous region,” he said.
