A youth-led not-for-profit organisation, Roots Organisation, has brought hope and essential healthcare to underserved populations across Nigeria through a series of community medical outreaches.
Speaking with The Guardian at one of its recent interventions in Isaba Community, Delta State, the Founder and Convener, Araloluwa Ajayi, said the group’s mission goes beyond temporary relief, focusing instead on sustainable community development and long-term empowerment.
Ajayi explained that the outreach, held at Isaba Community Secondary School, formed part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to promote health awareness and provide direct medical support to vulnerable populations.
Roots Organisation, she said, is a youth-driven platform bridging cultures and empowering communities through education, health, and leadership.
During the programme, the team offered free medical consultations, distributed primary medical kits containing face masks, cotton wool, gloves, methylated soap, plasters, sanitary pads, and wellness guide booklets, and provided food relief items to families in need.
According to Ajayi, the outreach was inspired by a desire to bring basic medical care to rural communities that are often left behind.
“In many rural areas like Isaba, even the simplest necessities remain out of reach, a reality that moved me to act. As a high school student, I wanted to show that meaningful impact doesn’t always begin with vast resources but with compassion, vision, and commitment,” she said.
She noted that the initiative was funded through personal savings and the generosity of sponsors who shared the organisation’s vision to restore hope and dignity.
The outreach directly reached and empowered over 150 individuals, including students, parents, and elderly residents. Each beneficiary, Ajayi added, received not just material support but also education on basic health practices and hygiene to help them adopt sustainable habits for a better quality of life.
“Projects like this create a ripple effect of hope and awareness,” she said.
Ajayi disclosed that Roots Organisation plans to expand its reach to more local communities across Nigeria and other African countries, focusing on healthcare, education, youth empowerment, and climate action.
She also announced plans to launch the group’s first borehole project, the Roots Water Project 1.0 in Maracana Community, Lagos, to improve access to clean water.
