College celebrates cultural day, urges students to embrace heritage

Starfield College, Agege, Lagos, has celebrated its 27th anniversary and Cultural Day, emphasising the importance of cultural values in shaping the lives of its students.

The event, themed: ‘My culture is beautiful,’ brought together students, parents, and staff to showcase and appreciate Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

Speaking at the event, the Principal, Mrs Sarah Oyinloye, charged students to embrace their cultural values, warning against the adoption of foreign ideas and culture that could lead them astray.

“You don’t need to start copying other cultures. Your culture is beautiful. We don’t want them to forget our culture, our mode of address, food, and lifestyle, what we believe in,” she said.

Oyinloye praised Nigerian cuisine, noting that it is more nutritious than foreign fast food.

She reminded that culture is instrumental to educating students, teaching them respect and how to honour their elders, which is key to learning.

The Director of Studies, Mr Chris Eigbe, highlighted the school’s vision, hope, and determination to make a positive impact, attributing its success to God’s guidance.

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mrs Rosemary Anyaeji, congratulated the students on their performance, emphasising that culture is critical to their development.

She emphasised the importance of parents teaching their children their culture, particularly in their local dialects, stating that a time will come when they must return to their roots.

The event featured various cultural displays, including the Eyo Masquerade, as well as dances from the Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa cultures, accompanied by traditional foods, attire, and poem renditions.

The celebration served as a reminder to students of their rich heritage and the importance of embracing their cultural values.
