Centre to honour Makinde, Zulum for supporting press freedom

The Media Centre for Promotion of Safety Awareness (MCPoSA) has announced plans to honour Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Babagana Zulum of Borno State, in recognition of their commitment to press freedom and media-friendly governance, as part of activities to mark this year’s UNESCO International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI), also known as Journalists’ Safety Day.

The Centre said that the event would take place at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa-Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 10.00 a.m.

In a statement jointly signed by the Executive Director and a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of MCPoSA, Dr Chinyere Amaechi and Mack Ogbamosa, respectively, the Centre stressed that the governors were being honoured for their media-friendly dispositions and commitment to the safety and security of all workers in their respective domains.

The Centre noted that the themes selected for the event were inspired by the growing influence of technology on the media landscape, adding that two major themes have been identified, which include “The Place of Traditional Journalism in an Era of AI and Digitisation,” and “Risk Assessment as an Integral Part of Effective Communication.”

It further stated that the global theme for this year’s Journalists’ Safety Day is “National safety mechanisms for journalists: Combating impunity and strengthening national structures for the prevention, protection and prosecution of crimes committed against journalists, media workers, and social media producers.”

The Centre, however, announced that Oreoluwa Lesi, a global technology expert and Founder/Executive Director of the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC), an organisation dedicated to building a more inclusive technology ecosystem for the next generation of female creators, entrepreneurs, and leaders, will be featured at the event.

Also expected to speak are Jamiu Badmos, a versatile expert in Quality, Health, Safety, Environment, and Sustainability, and Ojetokun Oluwole, Lagos Branch Chairman of the National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria, renowned for his work in communication and safety.

The event will also honour Prof. Innocent Okunamiri, a distinguished safety expert and one of the icons of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, who will serve as the Father of the Day.

Additionally, the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Eze Anaba, is among the dignitaries expected to speak at the event.
