Court jails driver, orders ₦3m payment for damaging FRSC vehicle

A High Court in Abuja has convicted one Mr. Yusuf Baba for dangerous driving, sentencing him to three months imprisonment or a fine of ₦50,000, and ordering him to pay ₦3,190,000 for damages caused to a patrol vehicle of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other impounded vehicles during his attempt to evade arrest.

The incident, which occurred on 10 June 2025 under Dantata Bridge, Abuja, unfolded when the defendant was flagged down by FRSC operatives for overloading during a Mobile Court session.

Instead of obeying lawful orders to stop, Baba sped off recklessly, lost control, and crashed into an FRSC patrol vehicle and another offender’s car, causing significant damage before fleeing the scene.

He was later apprehended at a major filling station along CITEC Road and promptly charged in court on two counts of dangerous driving and assaulting a Marshal on duty.

Delivering judgment on 29 October 2025, the court found Baba guilty of dangerous driving, convicted and sentenced him accordingly, while discharging him on the count of assaulting a Marshal on duty.

In addition to the prison sentence and fine, the court suspended his driver’s licence for three months and ordered full restitution for the vehicles damaged through his reckless conduct.

Reacting to the verdict, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commended the Judiciary for its courage and the Legal Department of the Corps for its commitment to pursuing justice.

He described the judgment as a victory for road safety, law enforcement, and accountability on Nigerian roads.

“This judgment has once again proven that the era of impunity on our roads is over. Anyone who endangers lives, attacks law enforcement, or damages public property will face the full wrath of the law. FRSC will never back down in defending the safety and dignity of its operatives and road users,” the Corps Marshal said.

The FRSC urged all motorists to obey traffic rules, respect patrol operatives, and drive responsibly, as the Corps remains committed to safeguarding lives and ensuring order on Nigerian roads.

The team also intensified efforts to reduce accidents by training motorists on safety policies nationwide and encouraging them to take responsibility. One of these was held in Ogun State recently.

The Ogun state Unit Commander, ACC Ramoni Alade, gave the warning during a courtesy visit to the Ayetoro council secretariat.

Alade said the corps had launched a sensitisation campaign titled “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” to educate motorists on safe road practices.
