Delta State Government has injected N100 billion as a special intervention fund for accelerated development across the state, with each of the 25 local government areas receiving N4 billion for infrastructure projects, in addition to ongoing sectoral investments.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori disclosed this on Monday in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, while flagging off the construction of the N59.7 billion Agbor–Uromi Junction Flyover, a project he described as critical to road safety, economic growth and regional connectivity.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the governor said the flyover was conceived to permanently resolve the persistent traffic congestion and recurring fatal accidents at the Agbor/Uromi Junction, a major node on the Lagos–East–West corridor.
According to him, the intersection had over the years claimed lives and destroyed property due to the dangerous mix of heavy vehicular traffic, motorcycles and pedestrians on the federal highway.
“The importance of this route to the national economy cannot be overstated. Anyone travelling from Lagos to the East or from the East to the West must pass through this axis,” Oborevwori said, noting that a lasting engineering solution had become inevitable.
He disclosed that the design and construction contract had been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with a completion timeline of 14 months.
The project comprises a 1.3-kilometre flyover along the Uromi–Agbor Highway, dual carriageways with two lanes in each direction, ramps and roundabouts, concrete drainage systems, kerbs and solar-powered streetlights aimed at improving safety and sustainability.
Beyond the flyover, the governor said Ika South Local Government Area was benefiting from other major interventions, including a N15.4 billion contract for 13.3 kilometres of concrete drainage systems and five kilometres of road construction to address flooding and erosion, as well as the proposed N12 billion, 15-kilometre Okpe–Abavo–Ekuku-Agbor Road.
Oborevwori stressed that the N100 billion special intervention fund underscored his administration’s resolve to spread development across all parts of the state and close long-standing infrastructure gaps at the grassroots level.
In his remarks, the immediate past governor of the state, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, described the Agbor–Uromi Junction Flyover as a monumental and impactful project, commending Oborevwori for sustaining policy continuity and translating plans into tangible development.
He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the ongoing economic reforms, though initially painful, were deliberately steering the country toward a more sustainable future.
The Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described the governor as audacious and workaholic, reminding the Ika nation of the numerous infrastructure projects executed by the administration in the area.
He appealed for continued support for the governor to enable him deepen development in the coming years.
Speaking on behalf of the management and board of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Mr. Frederich Weiser thanked the Delta State Government for the confidence reposed in the company, assuring that the flyover would be delivered to the highest standards of quality, safety and efficiency, and completed on schedule with minimal disruption to traffic.
The Agbor–Uromi Flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic flow, reduce accidents and strengthen Delta State’s role as a critical transit hub in Nigeria’s national road network.
