Yobe gov approves rural electrification commission to boost power supply

Yobe State Governor, H.E Mai Mala Buni

Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has approved the establishment of a Rural Electrification Commission to improve electricity supply to rural areas and address challenges faced by residents of border communities.

The commission, to be known as Yobe Rural Electrification Commission (YOREC), is expected to drive the deployment of renewable and alternative energy solutions, including solar mini-grids, wind and hydro power, as well as biomass systems in rural communities.

Buni expressed concern that many people in rural areas have lived without electricity since the state was created on August 27, 1991.

Speaking through the Focal Person on Digital and Strategic Communications, Yusuf Ali, the governor said: “None of the rural communities, including the ones sharing the same borders with Niger, are linked to the national grid. YOREC is part of Buni’s administration renewed commitment to sustainable, reliable and inclusive supply of electricity across the state, including the border communities of Geidam, Yusufari, Machina and Bade.”

He said the governor had also approved the appointment of the commission’s acting chairman, Umara Goniri, as well as other permanent members of the newly established body.

According to him, the legal framework of the bill establishing the commission is aimed at strengthening its institutional capacity and efficiency, in line with emerging energy needs of rural dwellers and global best practices.

Ali said the commission would ensure the provision of adequate, affordable and sustainable electricity to underserved communities, adding that the rural electrification initiative aligns with Nigeria’s energy transition agenda and the global push for clean and renewable energy, including climate change mitigation.
