For winning the 35th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, the government of Senegal has rewarded players and officials of Teranga Lions with cash prizes and land allocations.

Yesterday, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye announced that each player in the squad will receive a cash reward of €115,000 along with a 1,500 square metre plot of land on the Petite Côte.

The gesture comes after Senegal defeated hosts Morocco in a dramatic final in Rabat last Sunday, securing their second continental crown. The match was decided by Pape Gueye’s thunderous strike in extra time, after Senegal had staged a brief walkout in protest of a late penalty awarded to Morocco in regulation time.

According to APA News, members of the Senegalese Football Federation will also receive €75,000 each and 1,000 sqm of land, while ministry officials who accompanied the team to Morocco will share €465,000 plus plots of land.

At a grand reception held in Dakar on Tuesday night, President Faye conferred the national honour of Commander in the National Order of the Lion on head coach Pape Thiaw and all 28 players.

President Faye elevated Senegal Football Federation president Abdoulaye Fall to the rank of Grand Officer. The president singled out Sadio Mané for praise, lauding his leadership and calming influence during the tense final. He also paid tribute to Aida Faye, a Senegalese student who tragically lost her life in an accident in Morocco during the tournament.
