Electricity unions at the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) have suspended the indefinite strike action embarked upon over the last 72 hours, following the resolution of contentious issues with the company’s management.
The unions, operating under the umbrella of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), resolved to suspend the industrial action after reaching a fresh agreement with KEDCO.
The total blackout occasioned by the strike caused severe socio-economic disruptions, with small, micro and medium-scale businesses suffering losses running into millions of naira across KEDCO’s franchise states of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa.
In a statement issued on Friday by KEDCO spokesperson, Sani Bala, it was disclosed that the issues leading to the strike were resolved through fresh resolutions facilitated by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Future Energies Africa (FEA), the core investor in KEDCO, and the Kano State Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.
According to the statement, “KEDCO will particularly disclose that management have resolved inherited issues of unpaid pension obligations, employee emoluments, and benefits have been a key focus of the company after the restructuring exercise that had FEA emerge as the new Core Investor.
“The company is making progress and anticipates that our current plan and trajectory will resolve these inherited issues,” Bala added.
The statement further said that after the renegotiation, “the parties have agreed that KEDCO have paid the 13th-month salary (bonus) arrears of One Hundred and Fifty Million Naira (₦150,000,000), and appraisal bonus of Twenty Million Naira (₦20,000,000) dating back to 2019 and 2022, respectively, totaling One Hundred and Seventy Million Naira (₦170,000,000).
“2025 Bonus Payment: The Company has committed to settling the 2025 13th-month salary arrears (bonus) of One Hundred and Seventy-Four Million Naira (₦174,000,000) in the February 2026 salary cycle, alongside regular salary payments.
“Establishment of Dialogue Framework: An expanded meeting involving representatives from the NLC Secretariat, the Electricity Labour Unions, and the Board of KEDCO will be convened to address other pending complex issues. This collaborative approach ensures lasting solutions that serve the interests of all parties.
“Based on these agreements, the industrial action has been suspended with immediate effect. All parties have committed to a no-victimization clause, ensuring that no worker or stakeholder shall face reprisals arising from this action.”
KEDCO thanked its customers for their understanding and patience during the period of the blackout and assured that mechanisms and dialogue frameworks are being developed to prevent a recurrence of such industrial action.
