Abba Atiku defects to APC, vows to oppose father’s 2027 bid

Abba Atiku defects to APC

Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and leading opposition figure Atiku Abubakar, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging to work against his father’s 2027 presidential ambition.

The declaration was made on Monday during a formal reception at the APC state secretariat in Yola, Adamawa State, where Abba Atiku was welcomed by party supporters, youth groups, and members of the APC in a carnival-like atmosphere.

Speaking, the Adamawa APC Chairman, Barrister Shuaibu Idris, described the defection as a strong indication of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s increasing national acceptance, even within opposition circles.

Idris said the move by the son of a major opposition leader underscored Tinubu’s growing political influence and reinforced the president’s appeal across party lines.

“He has demonstrated a clear and unambiguous commitment to Tinubu’s leadership,” Idris said. “This decision speaks volumes about the direction of the country and the confidence Nigerians have in his administration.”

The APC chairman also praised Abba Atiku for making what he called a “bold and patriotic” choice, urging party members to welcome him and ensure equal opportunities within the party.

A youth leader of the APC in Adamawa, Jamilu Yusuf Danumma, described the defection as a major boost for the party ahead of 2027, revealing that Abba Atiku joined with his national political structure.

Danumma added that Abba Atiku had completed his registration at the APC Gwadabawa Ward before proceeding to the state secretariat for the official reception.

The APC’s Organising Secretary in Adamawa, Mustapha Atiku Ribadu, described the event as historic, noting that it coincided with Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s alignment with the APC on the same day.

“We are grateful to receive two Abba today, one in Kano and one in Adamawa,” Ribadu said. “Abba Atiku has shown clarity of judgment, wisdom, and political foresight.”

After his formal registration, Abba Atiku applauded party members for the warm reception and reiterated his loyalty to the APC.

He urged party members to unite and work toward President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

“We must work together and do everything possible to ensure the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027,” he said.
