In the wake of mass defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano, more political appointees have tendered their resignations, declaring unalloyed loyalty to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The appointees’ resignations come even as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf cut political ties with the former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Kwankwaso, after dumping the opposition party.
Amid a mammoth crowd of APC supporters and loyal Kwankwasiyya followers, Governor Yusuf rejoined the ruling party on Monday along with 22 of the 24 members of the State House of Assembly, nine of the 14 NNPP federal lawmakers and all 44 council chairmen.
In clear opposition to Governor Yusuf’s realignment, two more commissioners, alongside two heads of agencies supposedly loyal to Senator Kwankwaso, have tendered their resignations.
Those who quit their appointments are the Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, AVM Ibrahim Umar; the Commissioner for Special Duties, Nasiru Sule Garo; the Director-General of the Kano Pilgrims Board, Alhaji Laminu Rabiu; and the Managing Director of the Kano State Roads Maintenance Agency (KARMA), Hassan Danbappa.
Prior to the latest development, the gale of resignations had started with the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Kofar-Mata, and his counterpart in Youth and Sports, Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
In a resignation personally signed and addressed to the Secretary to the State Government, the former Commissioner for Special Duties, Garo, said the decision was taken after due consideration.
“I am deeply pained by the trust and support extended to me during my tenure. Serving the people of Kano State has been an honour and privilege, and I appreciate the opportunities I have had to contribute to the development of our state and work alongside dedicated colleagues,” Garo wrote.
Similarly, the former Commissioner for Internal Security wrote: “I write with profound gratitude and a deep sense of duty to formally tender my resignation from my position as the Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Kano State, with immediate effect.
“I wish to express my sincere appreciation to you, Your Excellency, for the trust and confidence you reposed in me, first by appointing me as the Director-General of the Special Services Directorate in June 2023, and subsequently elevating me to the role of Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services.
“However, following the recent turn of events, I believe it is in the best interest of the state and the administration that I step aside from this role. This decision, though difficult, is made after careful consideration.
“My service in these roles has been guided by the enduring principles of our leader and mentor, His Excellency, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which emphasise justice, discipline and service to the people. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, however modestly, to the security and wellbeing of our citizens.
“I assure you of my continued support to the government and people of Kano State, as well as its goals for a safer, stronger and more prosperous Kano State. Once again, I thank you for the invaluable opportunity to serve. I pray that Almighty Allah continues to bless you with wisdom, strength and good health as you steer the affairs of our great state,” AVM noted.
