The legendary Afrocentric textile artist, Jimi King gave it all to young artists and designers who graced the famous fashion and art gallery in Surulere, Lagos recently, showcasing a total African ambience; a fire-side chat, an exclusive tye-dying workshop, a live documentary screening and an immersive fashion show.
Young people converge at the renowned textile designer’s place to practically learn the art and business of traditional Adire textile design as Jimi King also spoke about how to preserve our ethnic culture, explore and succeed in the fashion world globally.
Highlight of the day was the fashion parade. It was four decades of fashion on Jimi King’s runway, where he showcased his latest collection.
Models in their first and second looks strutted the ethnic-themed runway in hand-painted lovely colours of stylish casual and occasion wears.
It was a parade of old meets new generation- from the workmen’s jumper, to dinner and casual outfits, the models conveyed the message that there are many possibilities with local adire, Aso-oke and other fabrics.
The designs are ethnic but cosmopolitan, traditional and contemporary at the same time, all creative and daring designs.
