CMUL inducts 28 medical laboratory scientists

• Urges inductees to uphold transparency, integrity in discharge of duties
• Expert advocates local content in diagnostic services

As part of efforts aimed at building a resilient and sustainable healthcare system in Nigeria, the Chief Executive Officer of Equator Medics International Limited, Dr Okafor Romanus Anayo, has advocated the inclusion of local content in diagnostic services.

Anayo gave the charge while speaking at the ninth Medical Laboratory Science Induction and Awards Ceremony of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), held at Idi-Araba, Lagos.

According to him, the promotion of local content in diagnostics goes beyond policy formulation and focuses on ownership, capacity building, strengthening local supply chains, encouraging local manufacturing, and bridging the gap between universities and industry.

The Provost of CMUL, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, urged the newly inductees to imbibe a culture of excellence, continuous training, and passion in their professional practice.

Oremosu, who was represented by the Deputy Provost, Prof. Daniel Odebiyi, further charged the inductees to discover their passion, remain purpose-driven, improve through capacity building, effectively manage challenging situations, and work as strong team players.

Also speaking at the event, the Acting Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Donald Ibe Ofili, urged the inductees to uphold professional excellence, integrity, and transparency, noting that they must remain worthy ambassadors of the medical laboratory science profession.

The Head of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, CMUL, and Professor of Medical Microbiology and Molecular Diagnosis, Kolawole Solomon Oyedeji, advised the newly inducted professionals to broaden their thinking and explore innovation beyond their immediate areas of specialisation.

Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Health Professions, CMUL, Prof. Abidemi Tela, described medical laboratory scientists as the bedrock of medical diagnosis, stressing that errors in laboratory practice could place patients’ lives at risk.

She, therefore, urged the inductees to imbibe precision, accuracy, and passion in the discharge of their duties.
