Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, has dismissed reports circulating that allege a mass expulsion of students during its recent matriculation ceremony, labelling the claims a misrepresentation of facts.
According to the institution, all disciplinary measures were handled on an individual basis, with strict adherence to what it described as established regulations and transparent procedures.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs and Protocol of the university, Olaniyi Adekanye, the institution stressed that the cases cited during the matriculation ceremony were cumulative, stemming from processes over its 18-year history, and were used illustratively to reinforce the university’s standards.
While stating that the impression of a recent mass expulsion is inaccurate, the university’s management described the references to student conduct made during the matriculation address as “historical and contextual”.
With the institution harping on a concerted societal response to foster responsible online behaviour among youths, the university noted that issues relating to digital misconduct and social media misuse are not unique to any single institution but are widespread concerns affecting educational bodies across the country and globally.
The statement read in parts, “The University’s attention has, however, been drawn to media reports that created the impression of a mass expulsion of students during the recent 19th Matriculation Ceremony.
“Management clarifies that no such incident occurred, and no mass disciplinary action took place at that time.
“Any disciplinary action, when necessary, is handled individually and in strict accordance with the university’s regulations. References made during the ceremony were historical and contextual, underscoring the university’s longstanding commitment to discipline and moral standards.
“It is important to emphasise that challenges associated with online behaviour and digital exposure among young people are not peculiar to any single university. Across Nigeria, and beyond, both public and private institutions continue to confront similar issues arising from the misuse of social media and digital platforms. Addressing these challenges requires a broader societal response. The university supports ongoing national efforts towards stronger digital safety frameworks.
“Achievers University continues to invest in counselling services, student mentorship programmes, and digital responsibility awareness initiatives designed to support students in making responsible personal and academic decisions.
“The university regularly organises sensitisation programmes, colloquia, and orientation sessions focused on ethical digital engagement, personal development, and responsible citizenship. Parents and guardians are also reminded of their critical role as the first mentors and moral guides of their children, particularly in shaping values and responsible online behaviour.”
