STL win Majekodunmi, Independence Cups
The Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), Segun Agbaje, has reaffirmed his firm’s commitment to the Lagos International Polo Tournament, of which the bank is the title sponsor.
The 2026 edition of the polo tournament has brought together top local and international polo teams, who are jostling for major prizes, including the Majekodunmi Cup, Independence Cup, Open Cup, Silver Cup and Low Cup, among others.
Speaking before the Majekodunmi Cup final featuring Lagos STL and Shoreline, Agbaje described the tournament as one of the biggest polo events in Africa, saying that GTCO’s support of the event is intentional.
He said: “This tournament, one of the oldest in Africa, celebrates not only the noble sport of polo but the values we hold dear as a brand: teamwork, discipline, fair play, and a commitment to excellence.
“Beyond the field, it showcases Nigeria and Africa to a global audience, reinforcing the continent’s place on the world stage. Our longstanding sponsorship of the NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament reflects our conviction that sport can amplify opportunity, foster connections, and deliver world-class experiences for all.”
Agbaje was on hand to witness Lagos STL’s victory in the event’s most-wanted crown, the Majekodunmi Cup.
The Seyi Tinubu-powered Eko polo kings defeated the hard-fighting A1/ Shoreline 10-7 in a gusty final, with the winning goal coming late in the last minute of the encounter.
That victory, which remains their biggest yet, was the third major title in the ongoing international tournament that entered its grand finale stage this week.
Apart from the Majek and Independence Cup titles, STL had earlier won the Dapo Ojora Cup, Owen Cup, and Argentine Ambassador’s Cup in one sensational swoop.
Speaking after his team’s latest win, STL’s Captain, Yasin Amusan, said: “It’s unbelievable. I couldn’t describe the first time we won, so I don’t know how to put this one into words. It could have gone either way after they (A1/ Shoreline) drew level halfway through, but our winning edge tilted it in our favour.”
Other big winners of the glamorous fiesta that is revered as the biggest polo event in Africa include the Lagos Art Hotel team that provided the biggest upset yet in the three-week-long fiesta, stunning hot favourites STL 13-12 in the last minute of the final, to lift the Chapel Hill Denham Open Cup.
The only visiting team to have won a major prize so far is the top-firing Kano Golden Alchemy that out-gunned Ibadan Imperial/RiseVest 10-51/2 to clinch the glittering Sani Dangote Memorial Cup played in memory of the late Lagos Polo Club President who passed on a few years ago.
