Ahmed Tijani Mustapha, a media aide to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged Yoruba people not to allow anyone create religious contentions in their region.
This was after a former Kano governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, questioned the religious tolerance in the Southwest.
Yakassai wrote on X, “I have NEVER seen Yoruba Muslims dragging Yoruba Christians or traditionalists. It’s always the other way round. Yet, Muslims are the intolerant ones. For a region that claims to be the most tolerant in the country, it’s baffling why this is the case for even their own!”
Reacting, Akpabio’s aide described Yakassi’s post as an attempt to create contention among Yoruba people, consisting of Christians, Muslims and traditional worshippers.
He said, “Dear Yorubas, please don’t fall for this calculated attempt to create contention in your midst. This man is trying to engineer crisis using the most obvious tool – religion. The fact remains that the religious tolerance of the South West is something the North can only dream and wish for. Don’t let anyone take it away from you.”
