Katung secures ₦8 billion medical equipment for Southern Kaduna Hospitals

Senator Sunday Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District

Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, representing Kaduna South Senatorial District, has partnered with the US-based humanitarian organisation Project CURE to supply medical equipment worth over ₦8 billion to 10 general hospitals across the district.

Katung announced the partnership after a needs assessment tour of hospitals in Kagarko, Kachia, Sanga, Kafanchan, and Zonkwa.
He said the intervention aims to address critical gaps in healthcare infrastructure and improve service delivery in public hospitals.
“For too long, our general hospitals have struggled with obsolete or inadequate equipment. This partnership is part of our deliberate effort to reverse that trend and ensure our people receive quality healthcare closer to home,” he said.

The five hospitals assessed will serve as reference facilities for the remaining hospitals benefiting from the first phase.
Following a review meeting, Project CURE agreed to supply at least 11 containers of medical equipment to meet demand, including St. Louis Hospital, Zonkwa.
“We are not just donating equipment; we are ensuring that what is supplied meets the specific needs of each hospital. Functional equipment directly impacts patient care,” Katung said.

He described the partnership as a long-term commitment rather than a one-off intervention.
“This is a five-year collaboration with Project CURE, guaranteeing continuity, monitoring, and sustainability. Our goal is to build a healthcare system that our people can trust.”
Project CURE Team Lead Rose Polycarp said the equipment, valued at $500,000 per container, would be delivered within three to six months, with a total of 11 containers valued at $5.5 million.

She commended Katung for facilitating the collaboration and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to sustainable healthcare development in the district.
Local government leaders praised the initiative. Hon. Peter Tanko Dogara, Executive Chairman of Jema’a LGA, described the intervention as timely and impactful.
“Our hospitals have dedicated health workers, but they are limited by inadequate equipment. This support will significantly improve service delivery, reduce referrals to distant facilities, and lessen the financial burden on families,” he said.

Engr. Bege Joseph Gaiya, Executive Chairman of Zangon Kataf LGA, also lauded the senator’s efforts, calling the initiative responsive and people-oriented.
“This is what representation should look like—identifying the needs of the people and taking practical steps to address them. Properly equipped hospitals will save lives and restore confidence in public healthcare,” he said.

The partnership is expected to enhance hospital capacity, improve patient care, and establish a framework for sustained healthcare support under the five-year plan.
Members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Jema’a, Sanga, Zangon Kataf, and Jaba constituencies also commended the initiative as a model of responsive representation focused on improving constituents’ welfare.
